Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, And Autism: Autistic Spectrum Disorders, What They Are, And How To Help.

Autism is a condition in which children are unable to relate to others in a normal way. Such children seem restricted to their own perspective, and appear either unable or unwilling to communicate with or understand others. They also show difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication. They seem to have a greater need for predictable routine, and can fixate intensely on certain activities or interests. Children might also show stereotyped or repetitive odd behaviors, including hand-flapping or freezing. Since Autism was first described, other less severe conditions of early childhood development have been identified, leading to what professionals call Autism Spectrum Disorders. Asperger's Disorder is another condition where verbal and cognitive skills are less affected, but difficulties in nonverbal communication are still seen.

Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, or PDD for short, is used for conditions that fall outside of the diagnoses of Autism or Asperger's. PDD is also sometimes used to collectively refer to Autism Spectrum Disorders. All PDD or Autism Spectrum Disorders present with similar types of symptoms, varying by intensity and from person to person. A child with Autism Spectrum Disorder or PDD might seem different from birth, by their lack of social responsiveness or over-focus on a particular item. Toddlers with PDD may appear silent, withdrawn, and indifferent to others. Severe Autism Spectrum Disorders may also involve self-abusive behaviors, such as head-banging.

Sometimes, special, idiot-savant type skills can be seen among children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, such as complex calculations of dates. Other problems include hyperactivity, inattention, impulsivity, and temper tantrums. The best way to treat Autism Spectrum Disorders is through early detection and intervention. Behavior therapy is particularly effective for PDD, along with providing individual attention and a stable and predictable routine in life. With early and intense intervention, a child with PDD can improve to the point of living a normal life.
